School History
The William G. Hibbard Elementary School was named after William Gold Hibbard, one of the pioneers of commerce in the early days of Chicago. He earned his fortune in the hardware business and became one of the major philanthropists of his time.
The school, built in 1916, originally consisted of the main building and thirty portables, and housed both elementary and high school pupils. In 1927, the high school was moved to the new Roosevelt High School building. In 1930 the junior high school pupils were moved into the new Von Steuben Junior High School building and Hibbard was made a six-grade school. In 1933, Hibbard became an eight-grade school and in a later change (1959) the seventh and eighth grades were transferred to the Von Steuben Upper Grade Center. Hibbard has remained a sixth grade school ever since. In 1992, an off-site State Pre-kindergarten was established and Pre-K is now located within the newer addition to the school.
Ground breaking for a new addition took place on June 19, 1997. On August 20, 1998 an additional
68,000 sq.ft. housed 24 classrooms, a science lab, computer lab, library and a new lunchroom was
opened. We now have internet access in every classroom and a wireless environment in the school.
