ENGLISH LEARNER / BILINGUAL PROGRAM
The bilingual program at Hibbard School services English Learners (ELs) in Kindergarten through sixth grade. When children who speak another language at home first enter Chicago Public Schools, their English proficiency is evaluated. Then they are placed in the appropriate classroom setting to best meet their needs. Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) - serves English learners whose home language is Spanish. These students are placed into a self-contained classroom for English learners of the same language background. Initial language allocation is Spanish, with a gradual shift to instruction in English as the child moves from full-time to part-time status. English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction is provided across the content areas. Transitional Program of Instruction (TPI) - serves English learners whose home language is one other than English or Spanish. TPI students receive second language support through an English transitional program and collaboration model provided by ESL certified teachers. This program continues until the student fully transitions to the general English program of instruction. Students enrolled in our programs have home language backgrounds of: Arabic Bosnian/Serbian, Khmer, Spanish, Vietnamese and ESL (English as a Second Language). The languages currently served in our ESL program are: Albanian, Bengali, Farsi, French, Gujarati, Illongo, Korean, Lao, Malayalam, Romanian, Tagalog, Turkish and Urdu! |
DUAL LANGUAGE EDUCATION
Starting 2019-2020 for PK and Kindergarten The goal of the Dual Language Program is for students to develop cognitive and linguistic abilities in both English and Spanish, in order for them to become bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural. The program is composed of two linguistic groups: EL-Spanish speaking students who accept services, and English proficient students through a lottery. Teachers use the same curriculum as general education classrooms with specific units of study taught in Spanish and a bridge to English to help build biliteracy identities that will lead to higher lifetime academic achievement.
