LITERACY
Reading
The Daily 5 model is widely used to increase the level of learning taking place while teachers facilitate Guided Reading groups.  Students have the opportunity to participate in Read to Self, Read to Someone, Writing about Reading, Word Work, and Listening to Reading.
Teachers launch independent work time with strategy based mini-lessons.  Students are able to self-select books at their independent reading level in order to practice and apply the strategies that have been taught.  Students often participate in book clubs. This structure encourages students to become lifelong readers and writers.

Writing
Our students participate in Writer’s Workshop. Teachers launch the workshop with mini-lessons and follow up with students using writing conferences in order to develop the writer and celebrate their individual achievements.

Family Reading Nights
Family Reading Night is held once a month from October through May. Parents turn off the TV and spend the evening reading with their children. Children tell about what they have read using words and pictures. Children who return their Family Reading Night papers receive a prize!
ROBERTO FORM
ROBERTO = Read Or Be Read To
ROBERTO creates a reading connection between home and school for every student and every family at Hibbard from pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. Research shows that children who read every day become better readers and better students for life.

We ask that all students at Hibbard read every day for the following minutes:
(Students can always read more)
Pre-K, K, 1st, 2nd grades = 20 minutes
3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th grades  = 30 minutes

Students may read on their own or have family members read  to them. Parents must sign the ROBERTO form daily. Children will need to return that form to school every Monday. Prizes are awarded to students who read daily and turn in logs regularly, even over the summer!
